I think you do know anatomy linearly...but painting is a very planar exercise and uses a different approach. Maybe check out some of adam huges work, or do a study of a painting you like. check out http://pyawakit.deviantart.com/ too...starting with flat color and tone is a great way to start a painting, then its just a matter of adding those subtle form indications within those big marks
